Throughout the story, he had tried to save the women from the towns gossip. auditory sense the gossip did not make him change his views on the widow either. He had strong appraisal of character along with a powerful mind of his own. He objected indirectly to the despicable remarks Mimiko, the widows errand boy, express about the widow. He as well told the Boss that having the widow was not a bad thing.
